PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) youth movement wants to take legal action against the Registrar of Companies (ROS) for the delay in registering the group as a political party.

The group has engaged former Attorney General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas and former President of the Malaysian Bar Association Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan to help fight for their cause.

Led by its leader Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, the group of about 100 Muda supporters submitted a letter from a lawyer at Thomas’ law firm to ROS demanding that the party be registered as soon as possible.

“We request to register Muda as a party on September 17th. As of today, we have not received any updates from the ROS on the registry, ”Syed Saddiq said after meeting with the ROS.

The former minister of Youth and Sports said that the group was able to meet with the ROS deputy director general to present the legal letter.

“The ROS informed us that the Muda registry is still under consideration. Approval has not yet been given.

“So we have submitted a legal letter to require Muda to register as a party within seven days.

“Muda’s protection committee is represented by esteemed attorneys Tan Sri Tommy Thomas and Datuk Ambiga.

“If Muda is not approved in seven days, we will take legal action against ROS,” said Syed Saddiq.

He said that by comparison, Perikatan Nasional only took three days to register under the current government, while Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia was registered in just 30 days during Barisan Nasional’s reign.

“Allow Muda, as a party of young people of various races and religions, to register in accordance with the democratic process.

“Let’s fight in the elections.

“It is a mockery of Malaysian democracy to retain the legitimate registration of Muda as a political entity,” said Syed Saddiq.
