PETALING JAYA: In the new normal, employers must provide employees with computers and an internet connection if they must work from home (WFH), says Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) President Datuk Adnan Halim Mansor.
Adnan, supporting WFM’s order, said one area that needed attention was the employer’s responsibility to provide employees with the equipment and facilities necessary to work from home, including a high-speed Internet connection.
“Existing social and labor laws should also continue to protect employees. Employers should not abuse their employees who work from home by making them work all day, as they are entitled to work breaks,” he said on Wednesday (October 21) .
He also said that employees should also have a dedicated space in their homes to work and make sure their device cameras are turned on to enable supervision.
“The WFH concept must be accepted as part of the new standard by both employers and employees. It will benefit both parties and is now practiced in developed countries,” he added.
Among the benefits, he said, is that professionals who were forced to quit their jobs to care for their children can seek reemployment if given the opportunity.
He also said that companies could make indirect savings as they no longer need to spend on expanding physical offices.
Adnan Halim suggested that the MTUC and relevant labor bodies meet to discuss amendments to simplify current labor and social laws with the growing new rule of working from home.
I was commenting on the WFH order announced by Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, which begins on October 22 and will be in effect until the conditional motion control (MCO) order is lifted in Selangor, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya. and Labuan.
He said that those affected would be mainly employees in management and supervisory positions.
This decision will involve 800,000 workers from various industries, as well as about 200,000 officials.
On Wednesday (October 21), the Minister of Industry and International Trade, Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, said that a maximum of 10% of those in management and supervisory positions should work at the site.
The Director General of the Public Services Department, Tan Sri Mohd Khairul Adib Abd Rahman, also announced on Wednesday (October 21) that a maximum of 30% of staff can be physically present in all public sector offices as of Thursday ( October 22).
