SIBU: A 24-year-old Malaysian woman studying in Tainan, Taiwan, was found dead and is believed to have been murdered.

According to CNA, the woman disappeared on Wednesday and an initial police investigation determined that she had been abducted.

A man who had been arrested in connection with the case on Thursday confessed to the murder.

The man admitted to strangling the woman and disposing of her body, CNA reported.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Riggit said the victim’s mother filed a report at the Sibu Central Police Station yesterday after being informed of the incident.

“The 45-year-old woman said that on Thursday night she received news from Taiwan Evergreen University that her 24-year-old daughter Irene Chung had been killed and that her body was found on Alian Mountain in Kaohsiung.

“He submitted the report to request the Government of Malaysia to supervise the investigation and to make known his wish to go to Taiwan to claim the body,” he said.

Lawrence Tiong, president of the Sibu chapter of the Sarawak Taiwan Graduate Association, said the incident was “unexpected” as Taiwan has been a very safe place.

He said the state body and the Malaysian Federation of Taiwan University Alumni Associations made arrangements to obtain a special entry pass for the family to enter Taiwan without having to undergo the usual 14-day quarantine.

The victim’s family flew to Kuala Lumpur last night and today would meet with a representative from Taiwan to organize quick access to the country, he said.

After that, they would make funeral arrangements, he added.
