SINGAPORE: A Malaysian has won praise after returning a computer tablet to its owner here.
Muhammad Khidir Samsudin, who wanted to be called Eday, and his colleague Mohd Yuamirul Che Yussoff, 26, became the focus of attention on social media when they returned the tablet that belonged to a Singaporean they found in a recycling bin.
Michelle Lim took to Facebook on December 2 to express her thanks for them and also added a message from Eday informing her of the discovery of the device she lost a year ago.
Eday, 25, had introduced himself as a “garbage collector” to the woman in that message.
However, Eday, who hails from Batu Pahat, Johor, is a graduate in scientific development from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
He now works with SembWaste Pte Ltd, which is part of the Sembcorp Group, a leading energy, urban development and marine group.
“It is not bad for me to gain experience from the top rung in this waste management sector,” he said.
“This will make me understand the work process better and one day I will be more grateful to my subordinates,” he said.
When asked why he didn’t choose to do similar work in Malaysia, Eday said Singapore’s stronger currency was the pull factor.
“What I get here at the end of each month exceeds the salary of junior executives in Malaysia. After all, to be a junior executive in Malaysia, you are required to have at least three years of work experience.
“If I go back to Malaysia one day, I can say that I have also had the experience of working in a foreign company,” Eday said.
According to Eday, SembWaste is not his first employer. Previously, he had taken part-time jobs in Malaysia, including as a temporary teacher at a school in Batu Pahat.
Lim felt that Eday and Mohd Yuamirul deserved a “more satisfying and rewarding job.” “They are young, hard-working and most importantly, honest and humble. They also found that they are graduates, they speak and write well too. These two young men can do something to suit their caliber, ”he wrote. – Bernama
