Klang MP Charles Santiago hopes Dewan Rakyat chairman Azhar Azizan Harun will allow his proposal to request written responses from ministers.

PETALING JAYA: Desperate for answers but without a platform to ask, Klang MP Charles Santiago has written to Dewan Rakyat President Azhar Azizan Harun, hoping that his questions will be forwarded to the ministers in charge.

With Parliament suspended due to the emergency, Santiago said MPs like him have faced obstacles in raising issues that require swift responses from Putrajaya.

“As a deputy, I carry the mandate of the people and the responsibility to execute my duties, especially in this Covid-19 crisis. I therefore ask for your cooperation in allowing me to ask several questions in writing.

“These issues are based on proposals to control the Covid-19 virus and affect the survival of people to face the economic effects of the pandemic. These are also the questions Klang voters are asking themselves.

“I ask that you allow this proposal and that you request written answers to these questions that I am attaching to this letter,” he said in the letter to Azhar.

Santiago’s written questions include asking the human resources minister if there were plans to screen all Malaysians working in the informal sector and how many employers have failed to provide adequate housing for workers.

He also asked the interior minister if Putrajaya was willing to offer a six-month amnesty to undocumented immigrants to encourage them to get tested for Covid-19 and get vaccinated.

He also wanted the minister of housing and local government to declare whether the government was willing to build houses for migrant workers and rent them to small and medium-sized companies that cannot afford to establish new accommodation for their foreign employees.
