PETALING JAYA: It is alleged that a man who was driving a van against traffic and collided with a car in Jalan Klang Lama was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
A video clip that circulated on social media showed the driver of a Volvo hitting another car as nearby bystanders tried to stop him in the incident on Friday.
A woman, believed to be the other driver of the car, screamed for help. Several motorcyclists stepped in to help. One of them managed to open the door of the man’s car.
In the video clip, that driver looked stunned and confused.
Following a report on the incident, the 35-year-old suspect turned himself in yesterday afternoon at the Jalan Bandar Police Station. Then he was arrested.
Bernama reported that the Chief Assistant Commissioner of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Control and Investigation Department, Zulkefly Yahya, said that an investigation was underway under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act for dangerous driving and under the Dangerous Drugs Act for drug abuse.
“After receiving a report about the incident, which went viral on social media, the police summoned both drivers to the police station to file a report.
“Both individuals reported to the Jalan Bandar police station,” he said.
He also said that the case would be referred to the prosecutor as soon as possible.
According to the report, the driver of the SUV tested positive for drugs.
There was a similar incident in June when an SUV ended up in the motorcycle lane on Federal Highway.
In that incident, a 53-year-old driver was said to have followed the GPS instructions that guided him to his destination, but was shocked to find himself driving down the motorcycle lane.
The presence of his large vehicle annoyed motorcyclists, who wondered how he ended up in their lane.
