Motorcyclist is the first in Penang charged with driving under the influence of alcohol under the amended law

GEORGE TOWN: A 21-year-old man pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving under the influence in Magistrates Court here in what is the first such case in the state to be filed under the Transportation Act. by Road (Amendment) recently published.

Saw Yen Yew is the first person charged in Penang under the amended Act, which now carries a jail term of up to two years, a maximum fine of RM30,000 and revocation of driver’s licenses for two years or more.

He was charged with driving his motorcycle under the influence of alcohol at 2.55am on October 25 this year along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway in Penang.

Saw, a computer technician, from Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas was charged under Section 45A (1) of the Highway Transportation (Amendment) Act 2020, punishable under the same section.

The Road Transport (Amendment) Act, which came into effect last Friday (October 23), has so far seen nine other people, including a woman, in Johor Baru charged under the law.

The original punishment under the Road Transport Act 45A (1) 1987 carried a fine of between 1,000 and 6,000 ringgit or imprisonment not exceeding 12 months.
