PETALING JAYA: With the Conditional Movement Control (MCO) order still in force and Covid-19 being a threat, this year’s Mother’s Day celebration sees restaurants having to adapt to the new normal of more takeaways and deliveries and less dinners.
Maria SteakCafe Business Director Chong Ai Lee said the company had a special Mother’s Day menu every year, and that there was no exception this year.
“The only difference this year will be that we need to serve different crowds because of the conditional MCO. For now, and perhaps for the next six months, I suppose delivery and takeaway services will continue to be the preferred option, especially for those who are taking extra precautions (to avoid infection), “Chong said.
Noted for its fillets, Maria has four outlets: three in the Klang Valley and one in Ipoh.
Chong said that due to the Covid-19 outbreak, having an e-commerce platform where restaurants could offer deliveries was important to the recovery of the industry.
Yeast Bistronomy in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, is another restaurant that has started offering Mother’s Day specials to take away and deliveries, in addition to dining customers.
Yeast Group CEO and Executive Chef Frank Ruidavet said this was the new normal for the restaurant business.
“Having our food available for delivery is something we started when the MCO was implemented. For us, the gastronomic experience consists not only of food, but also of the experience and service received.
“But we have to give customers the option they are comfortable with,” he said.
He added that restaurants should make sure they follow new standard operating procedures (SOPs) to give customers the confidence to return to dinner.
Although the Regent Chinese Cuisine in Kuala Lumpur has seen its customers return for dinner, it has also created a set menu for Mother’s Day to go and deliver. “I am confident that customers will choose to dine again as we have since reopened on Monday. Still, restaurateurs must do our part to bring peace of mind to customers,” said owner Kim Leong, adding that they adhered to the SOP. established by the government and strict hygiene standards.
