Mohamed Salah’s frustration is justified against Brighton, while Gini Wijnaldum offers hope to Liverpool

Where to start with that?

The trip from Liverpool to Brighton on a Saturday lunchtime should not, by right, be so controversial. You shouldn’t let Jürgen Klopp have to defend himself against a clearly personal attack from TV interviewers. All said and done, the result of the day was correct, but the taste in the mouth is still bitter.

Three VAR decisions against, another injury and an injury time of the tie leave a bad taste in the mouth and with good reason. These games are not meant to be easy or straightforward this season, they never would be. A bad week after Leicester has to be buried. Ajax in what feels like ten minutes will be tough, but for today, here’s the podium:

Gold: Gini Wijnaldum

I thought it was absolutely magnificent. He used his body wisely in terms of when and where to run, as well as being one of the few to use the ball competently in the first half. Right now, he’s Liverpool’s bicentennial man, you just hope he remains one of the few who does not commit a foul in this mess of injuries.

Silver: Jordan Henderson

Liverpool were poor in the first half. Perhaps it was further emphasized by the fact that Brighton left gaps across the field. But the intensity was lacking, as was the sharpness around the second balls, so the Reds needed a heat injection at halftime. They got it from the boss, who was excellent on his return. Encouraging signs on a frustrating day.

Bronze: Mohamed Salah

I’m going to defend Salah here. I think he was right to be frustrated at being taken away. The moment he does, you just set up Diogo Jota and go to Sadio. Mané that enters the game opens and then it is his number. Salah has had two really tough games without much support in attack. Klopp will have to monitor his confidence and fitness.

Must Do Better: Des Kelly

Whichever side of the fence you are on, it was clear that Des Kelly and several other representatives of British television have personally faced Klopp’s discussion with Geoff Shreeves in the past week. Des had decided that he was making his point regardless. Okay, a challenging interview is okay too. Talking to someone after you’ve asked the question and accusing Klopp of damaging his club when you brought up the problem and he wouldn’t have, sadly he isn’t.
