Diogo Jota will get the applause, but Mohamed Salah quietly broke another of Liverpool’s goalscoring records in a 5-0 win at Atalanta as he tied Steven Gerrard to become the club’s top scorer in the Champions League.
Salah scored an impressive breakaway goal in the second half as Liverpool put Serie A on the back burner Tuesday night.
It was the Egyptian forward’s 21st goal in the Champions League for Liverpool, the same benchmark that Gerrard had set as the club’s all-time top scorer in the competition.

Steven Gerrard held the record for his 21 strikes, but Salah tied him on Tuesday.
Salah is only in his fourth season at the club, but it looks like he’s going to create a bit of history by overtaking Gerrard this season. Reds legend Gerrard spent 17 years at Anfield.
The 28-year-old was also involved in Liverpool’s fourth goal, scoring Sadio Mane before Jota completed a sensational hat-trick in Italy. Salah will have a chance to break the record against Atalanta at Anfield in three weeks.
Tuesday’s 5-0 victory saw Liverpool extend their lead at the top of Group D to five points as they continued their perfect start to the European campaign.
It also meant that Jurgen Klopp’s men broke the record for the biggest win by an English club against an Italian rival in the history of European competition.

Despite Salah approaching a significant milestone, it was Jota in shape who stole the show against Atalanta and received high praise afterward, with Rio Ferdinand claiming he could take Roberto Firmino’s place in Liverpool’s starting lineup.
Speaking in the BT Sport studio after the match, Ferdinand said: ‘I’m sure Firmino will be sitting there compiling a little playlist to remind you [Jurgen Klopp] what he is capable of because Firmino, like it or not, will want to start and this guy has put him under great pressure ”.
Ferdinand added: ‘[It was] A perfect evening, Klopp couldn’t have asked for more.
“Clean sheets, new association in central defender, forwards – the recruiting team has done fantastically well.”
