There was a time when Liverpool fans couldn’t hold a world-class player too close to their hearts.
It seemed that as soon as someone showed a hint of being on another level to the rest of the team’s talent, they would be rewarded by one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Which, of course, are Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Just look at the recent history of the number of players who have left Anfield for Spain. Luis Suarez , Philippe Coutinho, Michael Owen, Álvaro Arbeloa, Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso; all demonstrated world-class ability, but did not feel that staying at Liverpool was the right choice for their career.
And now there has been another news that has linked Mohamed Salah with a possible transfer to La Liga. It may not have been a typical transfer rumor, but the Egyptian has spoken of the possibility of making the switch to Spain.
“I think Madrid and Barcelona are two important clubs,” Salah told Spanish media AS. “Who knows what will happen in the future, but right now I am focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool again.”
” It’s a difficult question, but right now I can say that everything is in the hands of the club. Of course I want to break records here and, I repeat, all the club records, but everything is in the hands of the club ”.
It shouldn’t surprise us too much that the Spanish media ask Salah about Barcelona or Real Madrid. After all, he is among the best players in the world and the best teams in Europe would happily have him on their roster.
But things have changed dramatically at Anfield since even Coutinho left almost three years ago. Jurgen Klopp wanted to make Liverpool the final destination for players, rather than a stepping stone as it had been for the past decade or more.

When a player desperately wants to leave the club, you almost always have to comply with that request, otherwise you run the risk of upsetting the harmony of the team. That was the case for Coutinho and Suárez, but not for Salah.
The Egyptian has quite clearly expressed his happiness to be at Liverpool, and not only with his current situation, but also the desire to stay even longer. Given that Salah is a world-class talent, this just shows how power has shifted in favor of players wanting to play at Anfield.
When most of the current set of players arrived, it was signed by the history of Liverpool but also by the vision of the club and the coach. Now when the players arrive, it is because that is their ultimate goal.
Let’s take Thiago Alcantara as an example. He was happily installed at Bayern Munich, Germany’s biggest club, and he won all the trophies he could get on his locker.
Then he craved a change, but not just because. The change had to be successful, as did the club, and chose Liverpool. That is a true statement that a world class player chose to leave a great club and move to Anfield.
Players like Barcelona and Real Madrid can continue to be the ultimate dream of many footballers, that’s perfectly reasonable. What Liverpool is doing, and to a large extent it has already done, is putting itself in that same support.
The power that the Spanish giants have in the game is not likely to fade anytime soon, regardless of their current form or position in the league. But what Klopp and Liverpool have built is an institution that can rival any other club in world football.
