KUALA LUMPUR: The government has not canceled the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) program, but is temporarily frozen, Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (pix) said the temporary suspension was to allow the ministry to make detailed specifications and improvements to the program, including safety, property, welfare and economic impact.
“Actually we have not finalized the cancellation of the program, we are reviewing and devising certain conditions. That is why we returned the applications, to allow them (the applicants) to comply with the new conditions.
“We don’t want to approve their applications and then hold them back, disappointing applicants. Deposits are not lost, applicants can get them back from their agents, ”he said during the question and answer session, in response to a follow-up question from Maria Chin Abdullah (PH-Petaling Jaya) on how the government could provide funding aid to program participants who have paid their deposits.
Nancy said that although the ministry was aware that suspending the program would affect the country’s economy, it should be done as the program had never undergone a detailed review since its launch in 2002.
In response to a follow-up question from Datuk Mohd Salim Sharif (BN-Jempol), the minister said that a total of 66,458 applications had been approved from 2018 to date and that China registered the highest number of applicants for the program.
In addition to China, applicants also arrived from Japan, Bangladesh, the Republic of Korea (South Korea), the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Iran and India, it added. – Called
