The Mitsubishi Xpander is one step closer to launch today, as Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has opened reservations and confirmed the specifications and equipment of the seven-seater crossover. The car is scheduled to make its official debut next month.
Only one variant will be offered here, and while the company isn’t talking about pricing just yet, it will collapse below the RM100,000 mark, so it should be competitive alongside the Honda BR-V and Toyota Rush. The car is powered by a 1.5-liter MIVEC naturally aspirated four-cylinder 4A91 engine, generating 105 hp at 6,000 rpm and 141 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. All of that is sent to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox.
In terms of trim, the Xpander will come with bi-LED reflectors and LED daytime running lights for the distinctive split headlight setup, marking it as the revamped model (the original car had halogen lamps). The grille now also features U-shaped slats that replace the triple slats of yesteryear, although the imposing Dynamic Shield face remains. They are also equipped with LED taillights and 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels.
The Xpander is slightly larger than the BR-V in all dimensions: 18mm longer (4,475mm), 15mm wider (1,750mm) and 23mm taller (1,700mm), with a 113 wheelbase Longest mm (2,775 mm). Ground clearance is also a bit higher at 205mm.
Inside, you’ll find a black interior (unlike the beige color scheme found in other markets) with padded leather seats, keyless entry, power button, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, an infotainment system. Massive nine-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six speakers, four rear roof-mounted air vents, a 360-degree camera system and a front dash camera.
Mitsubishi says the Xpander is the only car in its class with folding seats that offer a more usable trunk, while other competitors use folding and folding seats. The trunk is 495 liters with the third row seats folded; With the second row folded down, the luggage capacity increases to 836 liters when measured to the window line, or more than 1,600 liters when filled to the ceiling. There’s also some under-floor storage space, plus a full-size spare wheel (with a steel wheel) tucked under the car.
In terms of safety, the Xpander is equipped with dual airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, stability control, hill start assist and ISOFIX child seat anchors in the center row. Color options include metallic red, pearl quartz white, metallic graphite gray, and jet black mica.
Assembled locally in a new plant in Pekan, Pahang, the Xpander will embark on an itinerant tour starting from October 23-25 at Toppen Mall, Johor Bahru. It will then move to Ipoh Parade, Perak from October 29 to November 1 before finishing at IOI City Mall in Putrajaya from November 3 to 8.
