Chelsea gave themselves a mountain to climb after a series of sloppy defensive mistakes at West Bromwich Albion and, although they rallied to take a 3-3 draw, their frustrated manager Frank Lampard said they have a lot of work to do.

Despite concentrating on toughening up the defense in recent weeks, defender Marcos Alonso made two mistakes that led to goals, while Thiago Silva marked his Premier League debut with an embarrassing mistake that led to West Brom’s second goal.

“You can do as many meetings as you want; if you’re going to make those mistakes, you’re going to give yourself a mountain to climb,” Lampard said, unable to hide his two-point disappointment that fell to his newly-promoted opponents.

“We created two or three great opportunities in the first half, I felt we would create more, the only other problem at 3-0 was that West Brom was going to protect their lead more.”

“It’s a great lesson for us. We will improve a lot. We are still finding our way with new players and lack of preseason. Today is part of the improvement process.”

The tie leaves Chelsea in sixth place with four points from three games, with three of the five teams ahead of them having a game in hand.

“We have two great games against Tottenham [in the League Cup fourth round] and Crystal Palace. I hope to see an improvement in our performances, “said Lampard, before adding a note of caution about his team’s conditioning.

“As for the physical form of the team, it won’t be until after the international break [in October] I hope to see us at our real level, especially in terms of the ball, because we have not had time to work on that yet ”, he added.
