MIRI: A student has filed a police report here, claiming that a Facebook “friend” has scammed her of RM8,380.

The student from an educational institution here who lives in the Permyjaya estate, claimed that she was tricked into making eight donations through bank payments since November 8 to a company that was allegedly carrying out pet welfare projects.

In her police report, she said she had met a friend on Facebook.

The student said that this Facebook friend had told her that there is a company that deals with pet welfare projects here that requires donations.

The student said she had made eight separate donations totaling RM8,380 to a bank account number provided by the friend.

The student soon realized that she had been misled and had since filed a police report.

Miri OCPD Asst Comm Lim Meng Seah confirmed that a police investigation has been launched.

“The modus operandi is that the victim is lured into donating money to a non-existent pet charity project,” he told reporters in his latest updates.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code as a cheating case, he added.
