PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Health is already looking to the future four months in advance when preparing for a possible increase in Covid-19 infections due to winter weather conditions in various parts of the world.

Although the country’s infection rate is now under control, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (Photo) says Malaysia should take into account developments in other countries such as India, South Korea, Japan, Spain and France, where there is an increase in cases during cold weather conditions.

“So our concern is that there will be an increase in cases during that period and so we have to make preparations,” he said after attending the 2020 National Day celebration in Dataran Pahlawan Negara here yesterday. Dr Noor Hisham said that a mutation in the virus had made it more infectious and as such urged people to always be on guard and strictly adhere to standard operating procedure (SOP).

As there is still no proven vaccine in sight, the ministry will continue to implement control measures.

“Through these measures, people must comply with the POE while on our part, we prepare ourselves in terms of laboratories, clinics and hospitals; if there was an increase in cases, we could control the situation, ”he said.

“Through its public health system, Malaysia has been able to contain the pandemic through early detection of clusters.

“However, we will still need strong cooperation from the people when it comes to breaking the chain of Covid-19 infections,” said Dr. Noor Hisham. – Bernama
