PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Transport will regulate the use of micromobility vehicles once the 2020 Road Transport (Amendment) Bill enters into force, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The transport minister said such regulations would include mandatory registration and driver’s licenses and, if applicable, prohibit the use of certain types of these vehicles on the road.

“Once it has been published and becomes law, the Ministry of Transport will explain the types of vehicles that are in this category of micro-mobility, as well as which ones must be licensed and registered.

“Any type (of vehicles) in terms of safety that is not appropriate for mixed use on the road will be prohibited for the safety and interest of other road users,” he said on his Facebook page on Saturday (September 5) .

He also shared a video of a man in a helmet riding a one-wheel vehicle on a highway.

He said this vehicle is defined as a micro mobility vehicle in the amendment bill, which has been approved by Dewan Rakyat and will be presented in Dewan Negara for approval this month.

“This is not just any bicycle because it is dangerous, especially when used on the road. It must be controlled before an accident occurs, not only for them but also for other road users,” he said.

On August 26, the 2020 Trucking (Amendment) Bill was passed in Dewan Rakyat to increase penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and reckless driving.

According to the bill, micromobility vehicles refer to those that run on electricity, an internal combustion engine or human power, or human power combined with either of the two mentioned above with a maximum speed of 50 km / h.

This is defined as micromobility enshrined in the 2020 Road Transport (Amendment) Bill which has been approved by Dewan Rakyat and will be presented in Dewan Negara for approval this month. This is not just any bike because it is dangerous, especially for use on the road. It is necessary to control it before an accident occurs not only for yourself, but also for other road users. Three things to be taken seriously: 1) Public safety problems, especially other road users, due to lack of insurance coverage. In the event of an accident, the affected person will face financial problems. For other users, those who have to spend their own money or make their own insurance claims in order to repair vehicles or to protect their health. 2) After the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2020 is passed and becomes law later, the Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MOT) will regulate the types of use of these vehicles, such as requiring registration and have a driver’s license, including, if applicable, prohibiting the use of these types of vehicles. like being used on the road. 3) Subsequently, after being formalized and made into law, the MOT will classify the types of vehicles in this category of micromobility. Those that must be licensed and registered will be required to do so. Any type that in terms of safety is not suitable for mixed use on the road, its use will be prevented for safety reasons and the interests of other road users. Therefore, remember that this irresponsible use of the roads will pose a risk to the safety of all other road users, including themselves. Be a responsible road user.
