PETALING JAYA: Malaysia registered six new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of infections to 9,391 as of noon on Saturday (September 5).
No deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, leaving the death toll at 128, Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement Saturday.
Of the six new cases, four were imported and two involved local broadcasts.
Of the four imported cases, two were Malaysians and the other two were foreigners.
For the two locally transmitted cases, Dr. Noor Hisham said one was from the Telaga group in Kedah, while the other was from a case of severe acute respiratory infection (Sari) at Lahad Datu Hospital in Sabah.
The Telaga group’s new case involved case 9391, a close contact of the index case at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.
“It was found to be positive for Covid-19 after being tested on September 3,” he said.
To date, Dr. Noor Hisham said 3,458 people from the Telaga group have been tested, nine of whom tested positive, 744 negative, and another 705 are still awaiting test results.
“There are five positive cases of Covid-19 that are treated in intensive care units (ICUs) and three cases require respiratory assistance,” he said.
He also said that there are currently 150 active cases in the country.
Dr. Noor Hisham added that 21 patients were discharged, bringing the total to 9,113.
On the other hand, Dr. Noor Hisham said that there is still no Covid-19 vaccine that the World Health Organization (WHO) has proven to be effective and safe for use.
“WHO held a press conference on September 4. At that session, WHO highlighted that vaccines are effective in slowing the spread of diseases such as smallpox, polio and others.
“However, the effectiveness and safety of a vaccine is an important factor. This issue cannot be taken lightly. As such, the vaccine has to go through several tests and phases,” he said.
