PUTRAJAYA: The Sungai group in Kedah has recorded an increase in Covid-19 cases after 23 new cases were detected on Tuesday (September 8).

The group, which originated from a 39-year-old healthcare worker at a private medical facility, saw more colleagues and family members infected with the coronavirus.

Seven of the family members in the index case, including the woman’s husband, two older sisters and four children, tested positive for Covid-19.

The remaining positive cases were his colleagues at the private medical center, including one based in Kangar, Perlis and classified as a case in that state.

Two family members of his infected colleagues, a wife and a mother, were also among those who tested positive in the group.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said the group is currently under investigation.

“It is possible that if healthcare workers do not follow the ministry’s clinical practices, including wearing PPE (personal protective equipment), they could be infected by patients who are positive for Covid-19 and have no symptoms.

“We therefore urge all healthcare workers in clinics and hospitals to protect themselves first and foremost before treating their patients,” Dr. Noor Hisham said at a press conference here.

The Sungai cluster was first detected on September 7, with two confirmed cases at that time.

The index case was tested for Covid-19 after showing symptoms of the virus and tested positive for the virus.

Malaysia recorded 100 new cases on Tuesday, the largest single-day increase during the recovery movement control order.
