Ministry of Health: Conditional OLS has effectively reduced infection rates

PETALING JAYA: The conditional movement control order (MCO) imposed in areas that recorded a large number of Covid-19 cases has been effective in reducing infection rates (RO), says Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The Health Director-General said that while the measures might not be as stringent as a full OLS, the measures that limit social interactions managed to lower the R0 value from 2.2 in September to just 1 today (November 4).

R0 is used to indicate how contagious a disease is.

“The government refrained from imposing a full OLS to achieve a balance between health and the economy, which is why many social activities such as sports and school have been limited.

“But the measure has paid off after being imposed for just two weeks,” he said.

While he said the goal now was to further reduce the R0 to 0.5, medical teams were preparing to treat up to 6,000 cases in the next week before the situation improves.

Dr Noor Hisham said the team was managing to deal with the number of cases with an R0 value of 1 and would need to intensify efforts on the ground to curb the infection.

“It may take us three more weeks to flatten the curve, but we need the help of all Malaysians to achieve this goal,” he said.

Earlier, it announced that there were 1,032 new cases, bringing the country’s total to 35,425.

Dr. Noor Hisham said Sabah had 646 cases or 62.6% of new cases on Wednesday, while Klang Valley states had 244 or 23.6% of the total.

Active cases in the country have risen to 10,339.

There are 820 patients who were discharged, which means that the total number of people who have recovered from Covid-19 in the country is 24,815.

Dr. Noor Hisham also announced eight new deaths from Covid-19, bringing the country’s death toll to 271.

Seven of the deaths are in Sabah, while one was reported in Perak.

There are three import cases involving all non-nationals who had arrived from Singapore, India, and the Philippines, respectively.

He also said that the ministry had detected six new groups of infection, making a total of 143 groups active in the country.
