PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health may allow asymptomatic Covid-19 patients to be treated at home in case its low-risk quarantine and treatment centers reach maximum capacity.
Tan Sri Chief Health Officer Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said they were considering such a move, but that it would only be for those who show no symptoms.
“We admit them to hospitals to isolate them. If we want them to be at home, we have to make sure there is enough space for them,” he said during a press conference on Facebook Live on Saturday (October 24).
Dr Noor Hisham said that this had not yet been implemented in Malaysia, but that other countries had.
“We are only considering it if we really need it, but right now we are not,” he said.
On Thursday (October 22), Sabah’s Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Masidi Manjun had said that Covid-19 patients with manageable symptoms would be treated at home to control the growing number of cases in the state.
However, Dr. Noor Hisham clarified that those who are being treated at home right now are the ones who have had the Covid-19 test but have not received their results yet.
“At first there was a delay in getting the test results. For example, those who were receiving treatment at home would have undergone the test, but the results come back three or four days later.
“We advised them to stay home until they received the results. After receiving the results on the fifth day, we took them to the hospital,” he said.
He said this would cut a patient’s time in the hospital from 14 days to just 10.
