KOTA TINGGI: The decision to increase the compound imposed on motion control order (MCO) violators from the current RM1,000 should be discussed in the next seat of Parliament, says Datuk Seri Dr. Adham Slime.

The Minister of Health said the government would need to amend the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act of 1988 (Law 342) if the compound rate is to be increased.

“If we want the tax compound to increase from the current RM1,000, we have to amend Law 342 and the Ministry of Health is ready to bring this matter up for discussion in the next seats of Parliament.

“We have to discuss this matter in the Cabinet because there are parliamentarians who wanted the compound to be reduced, in view of the community that could not pay the fine. We need to gather all opinions on this, ”he said.

He was greeted by journalists after the mask handover ceremony to the Tahfiz schools in Johor at Econsave Daiman Jaya, here on Saturday (Aug 29).

He said this while commenting on Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement endorsing the recent Health Ministry proposal to increase the compound rate for those who violate the recovery OLS.

“He (Muhyiddin) is very concerned about the welfare of the people and we must ensure that the public adheres to the new normal lifestyle,” he said, adding that the 1,000 RM fine is awarded at the discretion of the issuing official.

“The maximum compound is only given for crimes that are considered to go against the imposed standard operating procedure (SOP),” he said, adding that the next seat of Parliament is in October.

On Friday (August 28), Muhyiddin had said that he supported the Health Ministry’s proposal to increase the compound crime rate (against the recovery MCO) by at least two to three times the current rate.

“However, this must be studied and Law 342 must be amended,” Muhyiddin said.

On Tuesday (August 25), the Ministry of Health proposed that the government increase the fine for aggravated crimes under the Law from the current 1,000 to 10,000 ringgit.
