KOTA BARU: The government does not rule out the possibility of modifying the 1965 Law of the Courts of Syariah (Criminal Jurisdiction) or Law 355 to establish more severe punishments for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), says the Deputy Minister of the Department of the Prime Minister. (Religious affairs) Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (Photo).

The current sentence under the law, which provides for a sentence of three years in prison, a fine of RM5,000 and six strokes of the baton, is considered to have little effect on the group of people.

This amendment should be seen as necessary to address their crimes, he told reporters after the delivery of food bank donations by the Islamic Religious Department of the Federal Territory (Jawi) at Kompleks Purnama near Pengkalan Chepa here yesterday.

Strict measures have been taken against those who did not dress as their gender requires, he added.

“All state religious agencies and law enforcement have been instructed to take action against those who do not behave accordingly,” he said.

He urged the public with information about activities harmful to health carried out by the LGBT group to come forward and make a report to the authorities to facilitate action against them. – Bernama
