ARSENE WENGER had the ability to get great results when you really needed them.
And Mikel Arteta, it seems, seems to have a similar ability to get out of a tight spot just as Arsenal fans start to lose the plot.
Wenger was in charge of the club for 22 years and there were some occasions, especially in recent seasons, when things were in danger of getting really tough. And then the Frenchman figured things out.
A seven-game Premier League winless streak, coupled with locker room riots, has turned things ugly for Arteta, prompting many of the club’s supporters to scream for a new manager.
But what an extraordinary week Arteta has enjoyed. Three games, nine points, two clean sheets and eight goals. At least for now, Arteta has silenced some of the complainers.
The 3-1 win over Chelsea was impressive, the 1-0 win at Brighton was solid and now this, a complete beating of Sam Allardyce’s West Brom by four goals.
This great away performance also included a couple of really outstanding goals.
When they entered this season, with the final success of the FA Cup fresh in their minds, the first few months were a shock for Arsenal fans. The equipment was clearly not as good as they thought.
Similarly, despite their losing streak in the league, Arsenal are not as bad as many have claimed.
Best of all, players like Kieran Tierney have led the way and others, such as Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe, have followed.
You don’t want to be in a foxhole alongside some of Arsenal’s players, particularly the more experienced and higher-earning ones.
But TIerney is the type of fighter you would want on your team, and what a great example he is proving to be. And for £ 25 million, a relative bargain.
He followed up his recent good performances with a good display against the Baggies and surprisingly the North Border Iceman even wore a jersey during warm-up.
While conditions were icy, TIerney’s first game will have warmed the hearts of all Arsenal fans.
For Tierney, it was only his second goal for the club, as he only scored against Watford last season.
But this was really something special, as he tormented Darnell Furlong, hitting him twice, before switching the ball to his right foot and getting a surprise by folding the ball around Sam Johnstone.
The second goal was out of this world. It was like watching Arsenal 17 years ago, when they were not only invincible but also irresistible.
West Brom was cut into threads again. Saka participated in the impressive play before receiving a disinterested pass from Emile Smith Rowe to get the ball into the net. This is already one of the first contenders for goals of the season.
Alexandre Lacazette took advantage of a poor defense attacking in the third. And it took the French forward just another four minutes to make it 4-0 when he landed another good cross from Tierney with one knee.
Now, Arteta has a chance to get a real boost. Arsenal will start the Cup defense against Newcastle on Saturday.
After a League match with Crystal Palace, Arteta has another match against Newcastle. Arsenal could win all three.
While a Champions League bid may be a bit optimistic, at least the most pessimistic fans must accept that a relegation fight is not going to happen.
