PETALING JAYA – Actress Michelle Yeoh has been named one of the Most Inspiring and Influential Women of 2020 by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The media giant’s “100 women” list highlights those who are leading change and making a difference during these turbulent times.

As part of its report, the BBC noted that Yeoh is one of the few actresses from Asia who enjoys a long and successful career in the United States.

She first burst onto the scene performing her own stunts in the typically male-dominated world of Hong Kong martial arts movies, before moving to Hollywood and starring as a Bond girl opposite Pierce Brosnan in “Tomorrow Never Dies.”

Yeoh, who hails from Ipoh, Perak, is still landing major roles in blockbuster premieres.

She is slated to appear in the upcoming sequels to James Cameron’s “Avatar” franchise, as well as Marvel’s first Asia-directed superhero film, “Shang-Chi.”

Yeoh often talks about the lack of Asian representation in Hollywood and is working to eradicate poverty by 2030 as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.

Joining the list were women such as Sanna Marin, who leads Finland’s women’s coalition government, Sarah Gilbert, who leads Oxford University research on a coronavirus vaccine, as well as Jane Fonda, veteran actress and climate activist.

A spot on the list was also left blank as a tribute to the many women around the world who have sacrificed to help other people.
