Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to rotate David De Gea and Dean Henderson continued to divide opinion following Manchester United’s 3-2 victory at Sheffield United.
Henderson got off to a rare start in the Premier League, against the team he had spent the past two seasons on loan.
Solskjaer admitted that he had targeted the England international to start at Bramall Lane, but their meeting got off to the worst possible start, when a mistake allowed the Blades to take the lead.
United’s stopper was slow to clear a back pass from Harry Maguire, allowing Oli Burke to tee off David McGoldrick to touch the hosts up front.
Goals from Marcus Rashford (x2) and Anthony Martial turned the tide for the Red Devils with McGoldrick scoring one last consolation.
Following the victory, Solskjaer praised Henderson’s response to his opening mistake, including a spectacular late save.
“It was the good, the bad and the ugly,” he told Amazon Prime. “Maybe in a different chronological order. It’s a test (for him). He comes back here and I was probably expecting it. To start, he shows his character for the rest of the game.”
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes said he felt it was an odd decision to pitch Henderson, with Wilder targeting his former goalkeeper from the centers.
“I think it [the mistake] It comes from not playing games. I think it was a bit of a strange decision to bring him.
“Chris Wilder obviously noticed a bit of weakness when he was here last year. It crowded him, he is not the biggest of the goalkeepers and he flapped a little bit. “
Michael Owen, however, feels that if United want to make sure the 23-year-old is ready to replace De Gea when he finally leaves, they must have opportunities to develop.
He said, “Other than that mistake, he did well. It was interesting to hear from the guys before the game, I understand the fact that you don’t want to change too much, but here is a young man who could be the future of Manchester United.

“Is De Gea going to be there forever? Probably not.
“You can’t just bank it for the next three or four years and then all of a sudden think what the future is.
“Putting it on loan is the perfect scenario, but that has happened in the last few seasons.
“Now it comes down to, can you give him enough time so that when it comes time to hand over the gloves, he has enough experience to play for this team?”
Scholes added that he felt Henderson was still behind De Gea in Old Trafford’s pecking order, but described him as “a fantastic No. 2” behind the Spaniard.
