PETALING JAYA: The president of the MIC, Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran, has suggested the extension or suspension of Parliament to resolve the political stalemate that plagues the country amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said that the extension of Parliament seemed to be the safest bet of the country to maintain public order, the life of the economy and political stability.
“During the implementation of an extension, the session of Parliament will be suspended and the affairs of the nation will be continuously administered and administered by the current government.
“This will ensure a smooth flow of operations within the country, as there would be no increase in the pandemic and no political upheaval,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (October 14).
He said the extension could come to an end once health authorities confirm that the pandemic has steadily abated or the conditions for conducting a safe general election are apparent.
He said that while this would be the first time the extension had been implemented in the country, it was common in the UK, Canada, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka to face an uphill task requiring safety and well-being. of the NATION.
“Therefore, considering that this is the first time that our country has faced a global pandemic that has been ongoing since the beginning of 2020 and is consuming the lives and livelihoods of its citizens at an alarming rate It is only appropriate for a historical solution that will be implemented, ”he said.
He said that the extension of the Parliament would come under the implementation of Article 55 (2) of the Federal Constitution which states that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong can extend or dissolve the Parliament.
Vigneswaran said that currently, holding elections would not be feasible, as it would likely result in a similar outcome to the Sabah elections.
“The sharp increase in Covid-19 cases after the recent Sabah state elections should serve as an alarm bell against holding early general elections which are well known to all and to go against them would be completely absurd.” , He said.
