Melaka to introduce electric tourist buses next year

MELAKA: The Melaka government is expected to unveil its latest attraction, electric tourist buses, late next month in a bid to boost the domestic tourism industry that has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chairman of the Public Works, Transport, Utilities and Infrastructure Committee, Datuk Roslan Ahmad, said this was the result of cooperation between the state government subsidiary Panorama Sdn Bhd and a private company operating in Kuala Lumpur.

“Electric buses will start their services from Melaka Sentral and pass through nine or 14 stations covering tourist areas, including the Melaka Zoo, Taming Sari Tower, the World Heritage Site for the Education, Science and Culture of Nations. Nations (UNESCO) around Banda Hilir, before heading to Klebang.

“Payments will be made by recharge cards, valued between 20 and 30 RM, which can be used for a specified period of time.

“To begin with, two or three units of the buses will be in operation,” he told reporters when meeting after the state assembly that met here today at Kompleks Seri Negeri.

With a capacity of 40 passengers, he said the fully electric, green technology concept buses will have wi-fi facilities as well as open air-conditioned spaces for tourists.

“If the response from tourists is encouraging, we plan to increase the number of buses. So far, the buses are almost ready, ”he said. -Called
