MELAKA: Melaka police have arrested seven youths for allegedly being involved in promoting illegal online gambling websites.

Mohd Sukri Kaman, deputy chief of communication for the Melaka CID, said police personnel detained the suspects during raids on two condominium units in Jalan Ong Kim Wee on Thursday (December 3).

He said all seven were between 18 and 23 years old and police successfully raided the premises after a week of surveillance.

“None of them had a criminal record,” he said on Sunday (December 6).

ACP Mohd Sukri said that an online gambling syndicate offered the suspects a monthly salary between RM2,000 and RM2,500.

“Their functions were to promote the websites through social media platforms for Malaysians,” he said, adding that the seven only started operating a month ago.

ACP Sukri said police also seized various electronic devices, mobile phones, cash and access cards from the condominium units.

He said the seven have been sent to pretrial detention to assist in the investigations.
