MELAKA (Bernama): The Melaka government is considering implementing the improved MCO at the Jasin Correctional Center following a sudden increase in Covid-19 cases involving inmates and detainees.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali (Photo) He said it was to allow a comprehensive close contact screening and centralized contact quarantine to take place, as well as control and prevention measures to slow the spread of the virus to prison staff and the community.

“I would like to clarify that the increase in Covid-19 cases is limited to the Jasin Correctional Center, there is no transmission in the community and the situation is under control,” he said in a statement issued by the Office of the Chief Minister of Melaka here on Friday (December 18).

Sulaiman said investigations revealed that the cause of Covid-19 transmission at the correctional facility can be traced to inmates and new detainees from Kajang and Sungai Buloh prisons related to the Jalan Harapan prison group, as well as due to the overcrowding.

He said that Melaka recorded an increase in Covid-19 cases from December 12 to 17, where the cumulative number of people confirmed as positive was 551 cases, detected in the targeted screening exercise conducted among new inmates and detainees of the installation.

Currently, the Jasin Correctional Center serves as a transit point, especially for new male inmates in Melaka, in addition to the A Famosa Detention Transit Center, he said, adding that 880 new inmates and detainees were received from Nov.22 through Nov. December 16 and everyone underwent the Covid-19 screening.
