KAJANG (Bernama): People who were sent to prison after being found guilty of violating the Movement Control Order (MCO) will not be registered as convicts, says Prisons General Director Datuk Seri Zulkifli Omar. (Photo).

He said some MCO offenders sent to jail were young and that their future would be ruined if they were considered convicted.

“When you enter the records (of the prison), it will be difficult for them to find work (after their release). On that basis, they will not be registered as convicts,” he told reporters after the Ziarah Sahabat Penjara program in the Prison of Kajang Monday (May 4).

Previously, Police Inspector General Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador confirmed that the names of the MCO offenders would not be included in the Royal Malaysian Police criminal record system.

Abdul Hamid said, however, that the failure to record the crime was not a “ticket” for people to challenge the MCO, which was put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli said 11 temporary prisons across the country were being used as new detention centers, with more than 300 people housed in the Kajang Prison and the Temporary Prison of the Malaysian Prison College. – Bernama
