The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) warned members of the public not to spread fake news after a false report claiming 13 cabinet ministers tested positive for Covid-19 went viral on social media.
In a press release today (October 9), MCMC said that the relevant authorities, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the commission itself can take severe action if they find that any crime has been committed under the Law of Communications and Multimedia 1998. MCMC reminded the public to be careful when sharing news or unverified information.
The government agency has also issued a denial on its Sebenarnya.my portal and the National Security Council (MKN) similarly posted a warning about the claim on its Telegram channel.

Chief Minister (Defense) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said at a press conference via Facebook Live on October 8 that authorities will not tolerate those who share unverified information and are monitoring the spread of fake news, citing concerns. that could cause panic or discomfort. between the people.
“I saw a post that claimed that 13 cabinet ministers tested positive for Covid-19. He added that the reports claiming 13 cabinet ministers tested positive are just one of many fake news that has gone viral on social media during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As of October 8, PDRM and MCMC have opened 270 investigative documents on fake news related to Covid-19.

The Rapid Response Team of the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia has also rejected 384 false news or false information related to Covid-19.
