Internet users are reminded to take their language into account when giving opinions on social media.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians have been told to be courteous and respectful when transmitting their opinions online.

This advice from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) comes amid concerns about the dissemination of information and false statements that touch on the 3Rs: race, religion and royalty.

In a statement, the MCMC said that it will continue to monitor various social media platforms for such posts, especially with the latest announcements regarding the two-week motion control order (MCO) and the state of emergency.

Such statements may be sanctioned under section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act with a maximum fine of RM 50,000, a prison term of one year or both.

Reports on such publications, statements and incidents can be submitted to the MCMC via WhatsApp at 016-2206262 or by email at [email protected].

“The MCMC also hopes that people can join the government to focus their efforts on curbing the spread of Covid-19 and helping citizens affected by floods in certain states.

“Avoid being overly passionate or making wild speculations and sharing false news that could cause disharmony.”
