PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating customer complaints that Telekom Malaysia had reduced the speed of its Unifi plan from 500 Mbps.

According to the complaints, TM had reduced the upload speed of the 500 Mbps (megabits per second) plan, introduced last month, from 200 Mbps to 100 Mbps.

Customers who saw that TM had made the change on September 2.

The regulator said the problem was highlighted by online news portals that claimed that customers could have been misled by the original ad more quickly.

TM, in a statement to LifestyleTech on September 18, it claimed that the error was due to a misprint in its marketing material and that “no changes were made to the upload speed settings.”

MCMC said it will not hesitate to take action against TM if its initial investigation reveals that there are items that infringe on consumer rights.

The Communication and Multimedia Law of 1988 will be applied to protect the interests of telecommunications users, he said.

He also assured that the investigation will be carried out in a transparent and fair manner.
