KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a total of 15 compounds in the amount of RM700,000 against six telecommunications companies (telcos) to register prepaid SIM cards without verifying user information in 2019 .
In a statement issued today, MCMC said the highest compound was issued to U Mobile Sdn Bhd with five compounds valued at RM250,000, followed by Celcom Axiata Bhd and Tune Talk Sdn Bhd (RM150,000 each), Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd (RM100,000), YTL Communication Sdn Bhd (RM40,000) and Tone Plus Sdn Bhd (RM10,000).
“The action taken reflects the firmness and commitment of MCMC in ensuring that the interest of users is always served, in addition to ensuring that the prepaid SIM card registration process follows the stipulated guidelines.
“MCMC will not engage in the matter and strict measures will be taken against those who do not comply with the stipulated guidelines,” he said.
MCMC said that in addition to compliance actions, several proactive measures were also taken, such as registering the SIM card using a secure and encrypted automatic platform and not registering users who own more than five SIM cards.
The compounds were issued for offenses under section 127 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, read in conjunction with section 242 of the same law, which provides for a fine not to exceed RM 100,000 or a prison sentence of no more 2 years or both, against criminals. .
