Mauricio Pochettino would seize the opportunity to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, should the board decide to part ways with the Norwegian.
United’s loss to RB Leipzig on Tuesday ensured that the Red Devils will compete in the Europa League in 2021, meaning they will miss out on the lucrative knockout stages of the Champions League.
Solskjaer still retains the backing of the United board, but a heavy loss to rivals Manchester City on Saturday will push the Norwegian to the brink, while the club’s festive period looks particularly challenging.
Pochettino has been out of work since leaving Tottenham 12 months ago and the Argentine hadn’t planned to take such a long break from the game.
The Argentine confirmed in a recent appearance on Monday Night Football that he is now ready to take on his next job and Athletic stated that he would like to take over from Solskjaaer at the Theater of Dreams.
‘[Pochettino] I would definitely take the job, ‘said Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whiwell.
“He has been out of work for more than a year and United is still one of the best in football.”
I think that if United signed him (the club is convinced that Solskjaer is still their player, by the way), Pochettino would be a good option.
“ He showed at Tottenham that he can build a team and exceed expectations. That being said, I don’t think it’s the guarantee of success that some seem to describe.
“He didn’t win a trophy at Spurs, or with any of his previous clubs, and his style is based on emotion.”
It would cost United around £ 4.5 million to fire Solskjaer and, although that is a relatively insignificant figure compared to the £ 18 million it cost to part ways with José Mourinho, the club has suffered heavy losses this year and continues to back Solskjaer.
Pochettino targeted players like Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek while at Tottenham, while Sir Alex Ferguson defended the Argentine as United’s standby coach following the departure of Louis van Gaal in 2016.
