Amanah President Mohamad Sabu is seeking an apology and retraction of the alleged libelous statement in Harakahdaily and the Harakah print newspaper.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Defense Minister Mohamad Sabu filed a defamation lawsuit over an online article that was published in PAS spokesperson Harakahdaily related to the resignation of Husam Musa as Vice President of Amanah.

Mohamad, popularly known as Mat Sabu, named as defendants the secretary of the PAS of Selangor, Roslan Shahir Mohd Shahir, the online portal Harakahdaily, the editor-in-chief of the Harakah print newspaper, Wan Nordin Wan Yaacob, and Galeri Media Serbanika Sdn Bhd.

Malaysiakini reported that Mat Sabu’s lawyers, Messrs. Amin Amirul & Partners, filed the subpoena in the Kuala Lumpur High Court registry on October 28.

Case management was set for January 7 after the case papers were served on all parties.

Mat Sabu, who is a deputy from Kota Raja, is seeking an unspecified amount of damages, a court order to prevent the defendants from continuing to issue the alleged defamatory statement, either orally or by print or online.

The Amanah president wants an apology and a retraction of the alleged defamatory statement, which will be published on the Harakahdaily portal and the Harakah print newspaper, within 14 days of the trial date.

The defamation is found in an online article uploaded to Harakahdaily on September 14 this year where, among others, it referred to the resignation of Husam, who is also a senator.

The article also referenced another online news report on the subject.

Husam is said to have put aside a news report that he had a dispute with Mat Sabu when he resigned from the party.

Mat Sabu’s claim statement indicated that the defendants published said defamatory statement intentionally, without verification and with malice for the purpose of sensationalizing the article online.

He also alleged that Harakahdaily was leaning towards PAS, a party that is a component of the Perikatan Nasional administration in Putrajaya.

Mat Sabu claimed that the publication of the contested article was intended to earn political mileage for the defendants.
