PETALING JAYA: Former Minister of Education and Dr. Maszlee Malik has announced his retirement as a committee member of the Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), which has not yet registered.
“All kinds of questions have arisen after Pejuang’s press release about the absence of my name. This statement in the media aims to (explain) the current status of my position at Pejuang.
“I… would like to announce my retirement as a member of the Pejuang committee.
“I want to fully focus my efforts on helping the rakyat who have been affected by Covid-19, especially those in Simpang Renggam and Malaysia in general.
“I will continue my efforts (to make) changes in education through my capacity as an independent MP and through activism and humanity work through… NGOs and fellow activists.
“I believe that efforts for change require not only power and position, but also passion and opportunity,” said Simpang MP Renggam in a statement on Monday (November 2).
Speculation recently emerged when Maszlee’s name was not among those listed in a joint statement by Pejuang, the party founded by former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, on the 2021 budget.
Maszlee said his decision was also made by the fact that he believes the political elite “feel nauseated by the game of power and politics,” urging politicians to focus instead on the needs of the rakyat.
On October 18, Maszlee was brought into the limelight when it was revealed that he had signed a statutory declaration endorsing PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the next prime minister.
Prior to this, Pejuang had stated that he did not support anyone as the next prime minister.
