MIRI: A light passenger jet slipped into a drain after slipping from Long Seridan take-off and short landing airport (STOLport) during take-off here this morning.
The DHC-6 Twin Otter plane, belonging to Malaysia Airlines’ MASWings subsidiary, crashed shortly after landing at Marudi airport around 10:02 a.m., said Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who was notified by the Officers from Malaysia Berhad Airport (MASB) Miri. office.
The pilot, co-pilot and the two passengers aboard Flight MH3622 were unhurt in the incident, which partially damaged the plane, Lee said.
“I personally contacted MASWings CEO Aminuddin Zakaria, and he told me that MASWings’ investigation of the incident is ongoing. I was also told that all passengers on board, including the pilot and co-pilot, were safe and no injuries were reported.
“The plane slid along the runway, which was reported to be wet after it rained this morning,” Lee said when contacted.
Meanwhile, Mulu Assemblyman Dato Gerawat Gala said he was informed by the Marudi police and Penghulu Willy Wing of Long Seridan about the incident.
“Thank God the passengers and the two pilots are safe without injury,” said Gerawat.
“I hope MASWings will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and inform the public of its findings as the MASWings public and passengers are concerned and need reassurance about their safety.
“The investigation should also focus on how to avoid similar incidents in the future, as similar incidents involving MASWings Twin Otter aircraft had previously occurred on the Marudi and Bario runways,” Gerawat said when contacted.
Gerawat asked the public not to speculate on the cause of the incident and to wait for the results of the investigation by MASWings and the Department of Civil Aviation.
“I hope MASWings can plan and maintain its regular flight schedule to rural STOLports even with this aircraft out of service.
“MASWings through its Rural Air Service has been providing connectivity and a very reliable and essential economic life line for our rural population. This has been greatly appreciated by our rural communities, ”he said.
“I wish to appeal to Malaysia Berhad Airport and the Ministry of Transport to improve rural STOLports in Bario, Long Seridan, Long Banga, Long Lellang, Mulu National Park, Ba Kelalan and Long Akah for the safety and comfort of our rural passengers .
“It may be time to update and extend some of these tracks,” he added.
Meanwhile, in a statement to the media, MASWings confirmed the incident and said he was working closely with relevant authorities on the ongoing investigation.
