GEORGE TOWN: The mastermind of a drug syndicate with international ties was one of two suspects arrested in a sting operation.
During the three-day raids, the police also seized drugs worth 25.87 thousand rupees in the Nibong Tebal industrial park.
State Police Chief Comm Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan said the 37-year-old mastermind was arrested on December 21 in the city of Nibong Tebal.
“The police questioned him when he stopped his car on the road. Upon inspection, we found 100 packages of drugs, believed to be syabu worth RM4.68 thousand, “he said at a press conference yesterday. Com Sahabudin said that after questioning, the police raided a nearby store used to store drugs.
“Drugs believed to be syabu, ecstasy, heroin and ketamine worth RM21.19 thousand were seized.
“We detained a second suspect, 43, in Nibong Tebal,” he said, adding that the police also seized a car, cash and jewelry worth RM243,231.82.
Comm Sahabudin said investigations showed the union had been operating since mid-year and that its supply came from neighboring countries.
“The drugs are believed to be for local distribution, especially in the Klang Valley,” he added.
“A urine test from the main suspect came back positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine and benzo.” Comm Sahabudin said background checks also showed the suspect had three counts on his record for drug-related crimes.
He said the second suspect tested negative for drugs and had no criminal record.
Both suspects have been in custody for a week to assist in the investigations.
The police are known to have identified two more suspects and are tracking their whereabouts.
