BUENOS AIRES: Diego Maradona’s personal physician will not face pretrial detention amid an investigation into the death of the Argentine soccer legend, a Buenos Aires court said on Friday, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing Argentina’s national news agency Telam.
Judge Orlando Díaz granted a request from Leopoldo Luque’s lawyers to prevent prosecutors from ordering his imprisonment during the ongoing investigation.
Last week, police raided the homes and private clinics of Luque and Maradona’s psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov, to determine if they had acted negligently.
Maradona died of a heart attack at his home near Buenos Aires on November 25, less than a month after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain.
Prosecutors said the records were requested by a judge after preliminary investigations, which included evidence from Maradona’s daughters, Dalma, Giannina and Jana.
Both Luque and Cosachov have denied wrongdoing.
During a press conference last Sunday, Luque described Maradona as “unmanageable”, saying that the 1986 World Cup champion should have gone to a rehab center after his surgery, but he refused.
According to Télam, investigators are trying to establish whether Maradona had received 24-hour care from medical personnel in the days leading up to his death, one of the conditions of his discharge from hospital on November 12.
Doubts have also been raised about the absence of an ambulance and defibrillator at the place where Maradona died. – Called
