JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor branch of Malaysia’s Department of Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 281 kilograms (kg) of fish into Singapore at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB), Gelang Patah, here, yesterday for the morning.
Its director, Nur Afifah A. Rahman, said an inspection of a truck at 1 a.m. found 56 kg of grouper (ikan kerapu) and 225 kg of Spanish mackerel (ikan tenggiri) that had no export permits hidden in the vehicle by the truck owner. with other barrels of fish that had the necessary permits.
The undeclared fish was worth RM7,004.83, it said today in a statement.
It added that all the fish was seized and that the case was being investigated under Section 11 (2) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 (Act 728), which was punishable under Section 11 (3) of the same law.
The section provides for a fine not to exceed RM 100,000 or a maximum jail term of six years or both, upon conviction, he said. –Named
