KOTA KINABALU: Bugaya Assemblywoman Manis Muka Mohd Darah was determined to recover from her illness and take the oath as an Assemblywoman from Sabah, says her daughter Fara Deeba Sabardin.
Fara said that Manis, 65, had been ill for a while and had not taken the oath after she won in 16 Sabah elections.
“We gave her support and encouragement, hoping that she would move forward. We told her that she should recover for herself, her family and the people of Bugaya who were waiting for her to be sworn in as their assembly member,” he said when he met. at his home in Semporna after Manis’s burial early Wednesday (November 18).
Fara said her mother’s health did not improve and her condition worsened three days before her death on November 17.
“We later found out that his kidneys were no longer working and could no longer process his medications,” he said.
He said his mother had also had a brain tumor, but never showed weakness or pain, even refusing to use a wheelchair to get around.
Fara said doctors placed her mother on a ventilator on Tuesday (Nov. 17) and told family members to be by her side before taking her off life support at Gleneagles Hospital here.
Manis’s body arrived at the Kg Bugaya Muslim Cemetery in Semporna around 4.45 am on Wednesday (November 18) after a 10-hour road trip from Kota Kinabalu.
“We accept what has happened and we will pray for her,” Fara said.
Manis leaves behind her husband, Datuk Sabardin Omrah, 76, and 13 children between the ages of 26 and 49.
In the 16 state elections, Manis retained his seat after garnering 8,557 votes to win by a 6,005 majority against six opponents of Perikatan Nasional, Parti Cinta Sabah, Parti Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Bersatu Sabah, Parti Perpaduan Rakyat Sabah and two independents.
The former head of Semporna Wanita Umno had been involved in politics since 1985.
