EDINSON CAVANI will finally enter the Premier League, ten years after he thought he would.

The Uruguayan forward made his debut for Manchester United as a substitute in last Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea, before playing in the Champions League’s 5-0 win at RB Leipzig.

However, Cavani would have joined rivals Manchester City a decade ago if the Palermo owner hadn’t sold him to his teammate at Napoli.

Former Palermo general manager Rino Foschi is convinced that the 33-year-old, who is pushing to start against Arsenal today, will be a huge hit in Manchester’s red half.

Foschi said: “During the South American U-20 Championship in Paraguay in January 2007, two forwards were on stage.

Besides a very expensive Alexandre Pato, who ended up at AC Milan for 22 million euros, there was a cheaper one.

“We took Cavani de Danubio out of Montevideo for only 3.9 million euros.

“Also, Fabio Capello and Franco Baldini, then in charge of Real Madrid, wanted him, so Edi was hidden for two days in a hotel in Milan until the signing of his contract.

“In 2010, Roberto Mancini wanted him at Manchester City, but Palermo owner Maurizio Zamparini preferred to sell Cavani to his friend Aurelio de Laurentiis, president of Napoli.

“I know Edi has wanted to play in the Premier League for a long time and for him now putting on the legendary Man United number 7 jersey is a great honor.

“He is 33 years old and so far he has not suffered serious injuries, so he can play at the highest level for at least three years.”

Cavani’s first coach at Palmero was Francesco Guidolin, who then went on to coach Swansea.

He said: “Cavani was young, but it was immediately possible to see his interesting qualities.

“Then he played as an outside forward and I remember the wonderful goal he scored on his debut for Palermo against Fiorentina in March 2007.

“I remember him as a serious and silent boy and we had a good relationship. In my opinion, he can play on many sides of the field as a midfielder or as a forward.

“For Manchester United, Cavani is a very good signing. He knows this is a great opportunity for him, so I think he will play well in the Premier League.

Another of Cavani’s coaches in Palermo was Davide Ballardini, who changed him to a No. 9.

He said: “I’m sure it will be crucial for Manchester United.

“He is serious, but he has a strong personality, and I think Man United will gain an advantage in the Premier League with this signing.”

Cavani’s three-year stint at Naples saw him score more than 100 goals with Walter Mazzarri, the former Watford boss.

Mazzarri said: “Cavani is the classic player that every coach would like to work with. A very strong player and a great man.

“He is a fighter. At Manchester United his strength can be very important for the whole team ”.

United acquired Cavani on a free transfer after his contract ended at Paris Saint-Germain, where he scored 200 goals and won six league titles after joining for £ 55 million in 2013.

But he missed PSG’s final Champions League loss to Bayern Munich this summer because he refused to sign a two-month extension.

Thiago Silva, who has since left PSG for Chelsea, said: “We miss him. He was our killer, he was very important to us ”.

Now United fans will expect the same for them.
