DAVID MOYES has done so well in West Ham that he has had longtime mentor Sir Alex Ferguson on the phone.

The man who made Moyes the Chosen his successor at Old Trafford can’t help but give his protégé advice, even as the Hammers prepare to play Manchester United today.

David Moyes says Alex Ferguson has always supported him, even when he faced Fergie's Man Utd as Everton's boss.

West Ham boss Moyes said: “He texted me two weeks ago after a game to tell me how well he thought the team was doing.

“Sir Alex was always very good to me. He was very good to me at Manchester United.

“He is considered very well and at that time replacing him was a great honor.”

Moyes, 57, has ridiculed those who labeled him a football dinosaur and is now trying to help West Ham break into the greats of English football.

He has silenced his skeptics who claimed he had surpassed him after miserable moments at United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland.

Bringing the Hammers to fifth place is proof that there is still life in the old dog, so what about those who accused him of being prehistoric in some of his methods?

Moyes said: “I feel sadder for people who say that because it shows their lack of intellect.

“I shouldn’t even have to defend myself.

“Perhaps in the field it has not been as noticeable as it should be, but there are also other circumstances for that.

“The biggest proof I can give is that I’ve had almost 1,000 games as a manager, which gives you an idea.

“Getting that many games means you are doing something right.

“Some of the occasions it has not been as good as I would like, but I took some difficult jobs.

“I went to the Royal Society, I don’t know that there are many other British coaches who have been offered a position in one of the big leagues of one of the main countries.

“I came back and took the job at Sunderland which, if you look at it, it was incredibly difficult.

“Sometimes you can try to do something but it doesn’t work.

“I’m in a really good place because I have a group of brilliant guys.
“I am enjoying this period a lot, I am enjoying being in West Ham.

I can’t do it in a short time, but I think I can make West Ham something much more exciting, much more recognized and much higher in the league.

“Did he have to prove something or show something? Yes, I was. I had to do it.

“The most important thing was, could he keep West Ham again? That is a really difficult task.

“The position we were in and the way it was going is sometimes forgotten.

“I hope that he will always forget and that we will never talk about relegation again.

“The fact is that this club has been moving and what I am trying to achieve is a vision that the club will never end like this again.

“I can’t do it in a short time, but I think I can make West Ham something much more exciting, much more recognized and much higher in the league.

“I would never regret taking the position at Manchester United, but leaving Everton was an incredibly important decision.

“Sometimes it is only when you leave that you realize how good the Everton team was and how close it was.

“I never regret what I did because it was a great honor. At the time I was being offered several major jobs in the UK and elsewhere and I felt, at that moment, that maybe it was time to go.

“But looking back, there are a lot of regrets because the team I left at Everton was so good.”

So what about United’s visit today, with third place at stake for West Ham with a win?

Moyes added: “Maybe United haven’t had the results, but I think it will be a challenge with three or four teams to win the Premier League this year, really.

“We are not at that level yet, but I will tell you something, it does not mean that we are not going to play above our station.

“It doesn’t mean that we don’t go to all those games thinking that we can win them and face them because we have a lot of confidence at the moment.

“We believe very much that we can win the games.”
