Manchester United cannot take a break this season.
Just when it looks like they’ve finally got their 2020/21 campaign underway, they plunge back into despair with another shocking result, and last weekend was a prime example.
There was a real wellness factor at Old Trafford after wins over RB Leipzig and PSG in consecutive weeks, but their form at home in the Premier League frustrated their optimism once again.
Solskjaer receives criticism
After limping to a 0-0 draw against Chelsea, United stumbled to their third league loss at home this season as Arsenal clinched their first away win in a top-six team since 2015.
It’s a damning result that leaves the Red Devils with just seven points, firmly in the bottom half of the table, while also generating calls for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s head on social media.
Most United fans will acknowledge that much of the blame for United’s struggles this season lies with the board of directors, but patience is beginning to wear thin with Solskjaer’s tactics and team selections as well.
Is #OleOut justified?
And with Arsenal’s defeat marking Solskjaer’s 100th game in the technical area for United, there has never been a clearer opportunity for fans to put his tenure under the microscope.
Plus, it can be easy to get engulfed in the negativity of a disappointing result that it’s sometimes smart to step back and see what the statistics say about the big picture.
In other words, is the hysteria surrounding Solskjaer’s work under threat fully justified or should United fans drop it for a bit? Well, we have sought to find the answer.
Premier League table since OGS took over
That’s because, courtesy of talkSPORT, the Premier League table has been calculated since Solskjaer secured the spot at United permanently in March 2019.
So yeah, that means the purple patch on their acting spell has been pushed aside and only teams that have played at least 38 games show up if you’re wondering where Fulham and company are hiding.
But without further ado, take a look at the chart in its entirety to see the damning picture it paints for the man currently occupying the hot seat at the ‘Theater of Dreams’:
Note: Leicester should receive an additional three points, bringing them to a total of 88, but without affecting their position, for their win over Leeds United.
A worrying outlook for Manchester United
It’s not terrible, that’s true, but seventh in the past 19 months isn’t exactly the form of a United manager destined to bring back the glory days.
It is certainly damning to see the Red Devils languish under Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City, while their perennial rivals Liverpool are 55 points behind them.
Not to mention, Solskjaer only won one more Premier League match as permanent boss than Ralph Hasenhuttl at Southampton in the same time frame.
Hell, even Crystal Palace is just three wins behind the Old Trafford club and they’re closer to Aston Villa at 17th than Manchester City at the silver medal position.
In other words, the situation is far from rosy at United and perhaps those #OleOut fans, for better or for worse, can settle their opinion with the assurance that the statistics back them up.
