Donny van de Beek has revealed that he feared his move to Manchester United could stall after the club stopped its persecution in June.

Van de Beek joined Manchester United earlier this week from Ajax on a deal that could amount to € 45 million and has been hailed by some observers as one of the bargains of the summer transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer personally convinced the player to move to Old Trafford and the club found little difficulty in reaching an agreement with Ajax, with Edwin van der Sar providing the assistance in his role as CEO of the Dutch giants.

Manchester United wanted him in January but Van de Beek admitted that neither he nor Ajax were in favor of a mid-season transfer.

The Dutchman has seen Real Madrid rescind a deal to sign him twice in the past year and admitted he feared the same when Manchester United hit the brakes on his search in June.

But Van de Beek admitted that after the Premier League season was over he was convinced the club would sign him this summer.

When asked about Manchester United’s approach in January, Van de Beek told the Dutch newspaper The Telegraph: “Ajax did not want to sell during the winter window and they were not in favor of a mid-season trade either.

Manchester United came back in June.

“The club wanted to go ahead and make an offer, but had to slow down due to the crown crisis.

“I thought that after Real Madrid, won’t it go wrong again?

“But after the Premier League ended, I felt like I thought it would be okay.”

Van de Beek will wear the number 34 jersey in tribute to his former Ajax teammate and best friend Abdelhak Nouri, whose career ended when he suffered cardiac arrest during a preseason game in 2017.
