Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is targeting three more additions this summer after the Red Devils sealed a £ 40.3 million deal for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The 23-year-old underwent his medical examination in Amsterdam today after receiving permission to leave the Dutch training ground before his country’s upcoming international games.

United have been following the Dutchman for a long time, but they seized the opportunity to sign him late last week after Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman promised to prioritize other midfield goals.

Jadon Sancho has been United’s priority for months, but a quick deal for Van de Beek will calm the nerves of many fans, who were beginning to worry about the lack of signings.

While Sancho remains the target, the Times claims the winger is just one of three more signings Solskjaer wants to make this summer.

Solskjaer wants Sancho to fill a void on the right wing that Mason Greenwood had temporarily filled towards the end of the season.

Although the 18-year-old shone, Greenwood’s long-term future is in the middle and Solskjaer wants Sancho’s breakneck pace on the wing to rotate his three forwards.

On the other hand, the Norwegian wants to sign a fast center back to play alongside Harry Maguire.

Victor Lindelof partnered with Maguire last season, but neither of them have the pace to play a high line and Solskjaer wants a faster defender alongside Maguire to lead his team further up the field.

RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano is a target for the club, but there are doubts the Frenchman is ready for the Premier League.

Perhaps most intriguing is Solskjaer’s desire to sign another striker. Odion Ighalo extended his loan at the club in January and was signed in order to allow Solskjaer to spend his budget in other areas of the team.

However, Ighalo’s minutes ran out after the restart and Solskjaer wants a better alternative to Anthony Martial so the Frenchman can experience some real competition.

With £ 40m from Solskjaer’s budget already spent, it seems inevitable that the club will have to sell if they want to come close to securing their other goals.

Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Andreas Pereira, Chris Smalling, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo all exceed the requirements and are available for transfer.

However, while there is interest from many clubs, United have long struggled to whip their deadwood due to the high wages paid at Old Trafford.

So the club may have to accept lower starting fees just to get some of the unwanted players off the books, particularly in a post-pandemic world.
