Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has welcomed Donny van de Beek’s imminent transfer to Manchester United.
After struggling to close a deal for Jadon Sancho, United have moved to add more quality to their midfield options with Van de Beek set to leave Ajax for £ 40 million.
Van de Beek will join a group of Dutch stars plying their craft in the Premier League, which includes Liverpool title winners Van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum.
The 23-year-old is considered one of Europe’s best young midfielders with an eye for goal, making him a huge blow for United.
But despite the boost Van de Beek will give United, Van Dijk insists he did not try to dissuade his compatriot from joining United.
“Did I try to change your mind? [about joining United]? No, “she said during a press conference with the Dutch national team.
“If it happens, and it seems like it, then I heartily give it to you.
“Great for him, great for Dutch football, for the Dutch national team and another great club for a player from Oranje.
“The same goes for Nathan Ake, who has gone to Manchester City.”
Meanwhile, former Liverpool player Danny Murphy believes Paul Pogba could leave the club if Van de Beek arrives.
“[Van de Beek’s] Isn’t he a defensive midfielder as such? “Murphy said on talkSPORT.
“He likes to get into the area and score a goal, we have seen that, he is technically good, he is an energetic midfielder in all aspects, box-to-box type.”
“Playing with Fernandes and Pogba, do you really believe that?
“You know what I think? I think Pogba might go away. That signing tells me Pogba is out.
“Why would you buy a player who is an offensive midfielder when you already have two offensive midfielders?
“You can’t play them all.”
