It was the first in a season that he has been in and out of the team and has struggled when he has played.

But for the first time, Pogba has explained how much Covid can get out of a super fit athlete like him.

Pogba said: “It’s strange, it’s difficult to explain because you wouldn’t understand.

“Even in training, I would tell the fitness trainer that I feel strange. It’s not me. I get tired very quickly and run out of breath very quickly.

“The first game of the season, I couldn’t run. I was trying.

“I talked to the coach, I said ‘I’m going to start the game and let’s see’, but I was very short of breath and it took me a long time to regain my physical shape and recover physically.

“I was not physically prepared, I would say. I felt physically weak. “

But after a full 90 minutes under his belt against West Ham on Saturday, Pogba is feeling fit and ready now for a big week ahead.

United face a trip to Germany to face RB Leipzig on Tuesday in their last Group H match that needs a point to qualify and next Saturday is the Manchester derby.

Pogba said: “I feel confident, I feel myself, I eat more on my legs and physically I feel much better.

“It’s good to come back to the team and score this goal to help the team get back in the game, it’s very important for the team. I’m very happy about that.

“Just playing the 90 minutes and playing games… It’s a big difference. I am also finding my rhythm.

“I feel a lot better, I felt like I could go again, control the game, get the ball. That’s what I like myself.

“That is what I think is good for the team. I am a team player. As long as the team wins, that’s the most important thing, you know.

“I feel good and we want to win. That’s why I came here and that’s why I want to be successful. We have the Champions League and we have City.

“We know that they are two very important, decisive games. We have to continue with this winning mentality, always. That’s what the club is about ”.

That surprising second-half comeback at West Ham was the fifth time in five league games away from home this season that they had come from behind to win.

For Pogba it was a very timely reminder of how well they played in the home game against Leipzig when they won 5-0.

He added: “We play like we love to play soccer. Remember that against Leipzig, when we played, when we scored the goals in the second half it was the same. It was two touches, two touches, one touch.

“Rashy’s goal was one touch soccer. It was beautiful. That’s who we are, we have the quality to do that and we have to do it from the beginning.

“There are so many occasions, we fit in, it was difficult for us in the first half and we showed character in the second half and that’s what we have to remember.

“Always. It has to be in. I mean, always. We can’t afford to lose and be happy with a loss or a draw.

“We have to be bad losers, that’s what we have to be, and we always want to win. Even 1-0 or 6-5 … We have to win. That’s what we want.”
